Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMAT)

Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducer EMAT

Experienced EMAT Specialists

We deliver advanced Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMAT) inspection services, offering  non-destructive testing solutions for detecting surface and subsurface flaws, as well as accurately measuring material thickness in conductive materials. EMAT is a sophisticated non-contact ultrasonic testing method that is particularly well-suited for environments where traditional ultrasonic testing may be limited.

At Bravura Inspection, our highly skilled team utilises the latest EMAT technology to conduct precise, non-intrusive inspections without the need for surface preparation or couplants. This makes it an excellent choice for inspecting high-temperature components, rough surfaces, or areas with restricted access. We serve a broad range of industries, including aerospace, power generation, oil and gas, and manufacturing, helping our clients ensure the integrity, safety, and performance of their critical assets.

What is EMAT?

EMAT is a non-contact ultrasonic testing technique that uses electromagnetic fields to generate sound waves within the material being inspected. It is particularly suited for detecting flaws, measuring thickness, and assessing corrosion in pipelines, welds, and other metal structures.

How Does EMAT Work?

EMAT generates ultrasonic waves directly in the material through electromagnetic induction, eliminating the need for couplants or physical contact. The waves travel through the material and reflect off flaws or boundaries. Sensors capture the reflected signals, which are analysed to determine the presence and characteristics of defects.

Benefits of EMAT

Non-Contact Testing

EMAT operates without the need for couplants or surface contact, making it highly effective for testing hot, painted, oxidised, or rough surfaces. This advantage also reduces setup time and contamination risks, especially in high-temperature or hazardous environments.

Versatile Application

EMAT is ideal for inspecting a wide variety of conductive materials and configurations, including pipelines, storage tanks, heat exchangers, weld seams, and structural components. Its adaptability makes it suitable for both in-service inspections and routine maintenance.

High Precision

EMAT delivers highly accurate and repeatable results, enabling the detection of corrosion, cracking, wall thinning, and other critical flaws. It is also capable of measuring material thickness with excellent precision, making it a trusted tool for long-term asset monitoring.

Efficiency

Because EMAT requires minimal surface preparation and no coupling medium, it significantly speeds up inspection times. This leads to more efficient workflows, less downtime, and cost savings for clients—especially in large-scale or remote applications where traditional methods are less practical.
